Membrane Switches

Hallmark manufactures both tactile membrane switches and non-tactile membrane switches. Tactile switches provide a momentary “snap” when depressed to provide operators with feedback. Hallmark Nameplate allows you to choose how the tactile sensation is provided: either through metal domes in the circuit layer; polyester formed domes in the top circuit layer or polyester formed domes in the graphic overlay.

Non-tactile membrane switches consist of a top and bottom circuit layer, and activation of the keys and buttons provides the operator with little or no feedback.

Membrane switches from Hallmark Nameplate can be specifically designed to meet your environmental considerations. Our switches are internally vented and sealed. ESD shielding, EMI shielding, and RFI shielding are available. Hallmark Nameplate’s membrane switches can also be provided with embedded surface mount LEDs and can also be provided with our without terminating connectors.

Hallmark Nameplate can also include membrane nameplates with:

  • Indicator Lights: LED’s can be embedded in the membrane switch. The LED can be mounted behind a clear window, making the natural color of the LED visible, or a color tinted window may be provided. Dead front effects are possible, allowing the light to be visible only when illuminated.
  • Chemical and Weather Resistant: Our membrane switches are constructed of multiple layers of polyester materials assembled with permanent acrylic adhesives. The switch construction is internally vented to maintain an environmental seal.
  • ESD/EMI/RFI Shielding: We can provide several shield methods to resolve your particular problem. We offer conductive screen printed or die cut shielding laminates. Materials are available with or without adhesive backing.

Additional Information About Membrane Switches: A membrane switch is an operator interface between the user and a piece of equipment. A membrane switch uses momentary keys in which a closure is sensed by the printed circuit board assembly in the equipment. It is typically produced using heat stabilized polyester as a base material with conductive inks applied for circuitry. Various layers of adhesive and conductive layers are assembled and the switch is usually covered with a graphic overlay. Standard types of membrane switches include a non-tactile type in which the two conductive layers are separated by air and the tactile type in which a dome element is used to close the circuit. Standard membrane switch designs are internally vented to maintain an environmental seal.
